TIENDA INGLESA SUPERMARKETS - CAR ONE IN CANELONES, URUGUAY
Tienda Inglesa's new location at Car One in Canelones, Uruguay, is the first supermarket in Latin America to receive the "Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiency" (EDGE) certification due to its energy-efficient processes and use of recycled materials.
Opened in November as "the most modern supermarket in the country", the store focused on sustainability:
- The barbecue packaging is made from recycled plastic.
- 80% reduction in the use of nylon in the bakery, replacing it with kraft paper.
- There is a Recycling Point that allows customers to bring batteries, plastics and cans for reuse.
- Wireless sensors that monitor CO2 concentration in frequently used spaces.
The prestigious EDGE certificate, awarded by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank, is a certification system for green buildings in emerging markets. Tienda Inglesa is a traditional supermarket chain in Uruguay, founded in 1866.
